By the CLRX Magazine Crew (Evan Cihlar, Walker Wood, CJ Williams, Roddy Irving, Ayden Danner, Garret Monnin, and Logan Dahir) The Edition 2, Volume 1 Magazine, "Building Your First Model Railroad" will be released on June 27th, 2017.
Submitted by Walker Wood In the 1990s, General Electric and General Motor’s Electro Motive Division were experimenting with AC Traction and more power output in the prime mover. An example of the latter would be the EMD SD90MAC, which had a 6,000 horsepower “H” series powerplant. This locomotive was plagued with mechanical problems however, leading to most of the fleet being stored or completely rebuilt. An example of the former would be the GE AC4400CW, a very successful AC traction locomotive that uses a 16 cylinder version of the 7FDL prime mover from GE. While some experimentations with these two new concepts were ever failures or successes, the SD60MAC didn't make it past the testing phase with demonstrator units. These units were basically early SD60M models (named “Triclopses” because of their three piece windshield) riding on a pair of EMD AC traction motors. Only 4 demonstrators were built for the Burlington Northern to test with. These units wore a unique version of the BN green and white livery.
After testing concluded, BN placed subsequent orders for a new locomotive model, the 4,000 horsepower SD70MAC. The BN owned 317 SD70MACs after all were delivered prior to the merger with the Santa Fe Railway in 1996. These locomotives wore a new livery called that earned this livery the nickname “executive” or “green stein.” All engines delivered after that for the BN wore the same colors as the engines previously delivered, but had the number located under the cab, rather than on the long hood, where a BNSF patch was put on the side of the long hood. To summarize, the SD60MAC was the pioneer for AC traction. The concept of AC traction also led to the development of newer and more powerful prime movers. Some models were huge successes, while others only had a few buyers. Our first volume of the CLRX e-Magazine series, "Model Railroading Basics" focuses on all railroading subjects, large and small. In this edition, "Riding the Rails of a Modern Model Railroad" we have included O, HO, and N scale model railroading. Model railroading is not the whole subject of this magazine, as there are many arricles including real life sotuations. By Evan C. Engine Crew and MOW Now that we have updated our website, there are new features available for everyone to use. This is one of the features. From this point forth, the C-Lines Railway Crew will be updating the blog as soon as we learn a new technique, update something on the railroad, or add something to the railroad. One of the things that I did today was put in a speaker system so that everyone that is in the room that has a radio or not, can hear all of the radio talk between engine crews, dispatch, ground crew, yard tower/switch tower, and maintenance of way crews. This speaker system also gives us a way to play music while we are working, or while we are running trains to keep it more lively than just running a bunch of sound units (because you do have to admit that sometimes they do get annoying when you have 8 of them on at the same time) Comment if you would like to see a post on how we got this system running!
